Shrines and Temples of Nikko — UNESCO World Heritage

The “Shrines and Temples of Nikko” were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. This extraordinary complex comprises 103 buildings spread across three sacred sites: Toshogu Shrine, Futarasan Shrine, and Rinnoji Temple — together housing 8 National Treasures and 34 Important Cultural Properties.

Built over centuries in a magnificent cedar forest setting, these structures represent the pinnacle of Japanese religious architecture from the Edo period. The harmonious integration of sacred buildings with the surrounding natural landscape has been admired for over 400 years.

Our private car tour lets you experience all of this at your own pace — no crowded buses, no rushing between train schedules. Your dedicated English-speaking driver picks you up at your Tokyo hotel and handles everything.

Yomeimon Gate at Nikko Toshogu Shrine

Toshogu Shrine — Japan's Most Lavish Shrine

Nikko Toshogu is the ornate mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate that ruled Japan for over 250 years. Originally a modest shrine, it was transformed into a spectacular complex by Ieyasu’s grandson Iemitsu in 1636, employing over 15,000 artisans and craftsmen from across the nation.

The crown jewel is the Yomeimon Gate (陽明門) — often called the most ornate structure in all of Japan. Covered in over 500 intricate carvings of dragons, phoenixes, flowers, and mythical creatures, it’s said you could stare at it all day and never notice every detail (earning its nickname “Higurashi-no-mon” — the gate where you lose track of time).

Don’t miss the iconic “Three Wise Monkeys” (see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil) carved above the Sacred Stable, and the “Crying Dragon” ceiling painting in Honjido Hall — clap beneath it and hear an extraordinary resonating echo.

Shinkyo Sacred Bridge Nikko Japan

Shinkyo Bridge & Rinnoji Temple

The Shinkyo Bridge (神橋), a stunning vermillion-lacquered arch spanning the Daiya River, marks the sacred entrance to Nikko’s shrine complex. Ranked among Japan’s three most beautiful bridges, its elegant curves against the rushing mountain waters and forested backdrop make it one of Nikko’s most photographed spots.

A short walk brings you to Rinnoji Temple (輪王寺), Nikko’s most important Buddhist temple and part of the UNESCO World Heritage ensemble. Its main hall, Sanbutsudo, houses three magnificent gilded Buddha statues, each over 8 meters tall, representing different manifestations of Buddha associated with the three sacred mountains of Nikko. The adjacent Shoyoen Garden offers a serene stroll among ponds, bridges, and seasonal foliage.

Kegon Falls waterfall Nikko Japan

Kegon Falls — One of Japan's Three Great Waterfalls

Your driver takes you up the legendary Irohazaka Winding Road — 48 hairpin curves climbing through dense mountain forest — to reach the highlands above Nikko.

Kegon Falls (華厳の滝) plunges 97 meters from the shores of Lake Chuzenji, ranking among Japan’s Three Great Waterfalls. Recognized in 1927 as one of the “Eight Views” representing Japan’s natural beauty, the falls are breathtaking in every season — emerald-green spray in summer, fiery autumn foliage framing the cascade, and dramatic blue ice formations in winter.

Take the elevator 100 meters down to the observation platform at the base for a thundering, mist-soaked encounter with the raw power of the falls. On clear days, you can see a dozen smaller cascades seeping from the surrounding cliff face.

Lake Chuzenji autumn Nikko Japan

Lake Chuzenji — Japan's Highest Natural Lake

Lake Chuzenji (中禅寺湖) sits at 1,269 meters elevation, making it the highest natural lake in Japan. Formed over 20,000 years ago when volcanic lava from Mount Nantai blocked the Daiya River valley, the lake stretches nearly 12 kilometers in circumference.

During the Meiji era, the lake’s cool climate attracted foreign diplomats who built summer retreats along its shores — several of these charming Western-style villas still stand today. In autumn (late September through October), the surrounding mountains erupt in red, orange, and gold, creating one of the most spectacular foliage displays in the Kanto region.

Enjoy a lakeside walk, visit the historic British and Italian embassy villas, or simply take in the stunning reflections of Mount Nantai on the calm water.

Jizo statues Kanmangafuchi Abyss Nikko

Hidden Gems: Kanmangafuchi Abyss & Cedar Avenue

For those who want to go beyond the famous landmarks, Nikko hides two unforgettable experiences along the return route.

The Kanmangafuchi Abyss (憾満ヶ淵) is a serene gorge formed by ancient lava flows, lined with around 70 mysterious stone Jizo statues wearing red knitted caps and bibs. Known as the “Ghost Jizo” (化け地蔵) because locals say their count seems to change each time you visit, these weathered guardians create an hauntingly beautiful scene along the mossy riverside path.

On the drive back, pass through the Nikko Cedar Avenue (杉並木) — a 35-kilometer corridor of ancient cryptomeria trees planted over 400 years ago during the early Edo period. Recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest tree-lined avenue in the world, it’s a fitting finale to an extraordinary day.
